Social & Environmental Responsibility
Vitrales by Margarita Llort shares its experience in stained glass art and the production of glass products with the community. We donate part of the profits from two of our collections to social development and environmental conservation initiatives.
Art and social welfare
The “Artesanos de Luz" collection was born thanks to Salvadoran plastic artist Fernando Llort. Inspired by his designs, Margarita Llort leveraged her experience in glass art by creating handmade limited-edition items.
A part of the profits from this collection goes to the Fernando Llort Foundation in El Salvador and Central America, which promotes the well-being and development of human beings through teaching art and culture.
Preserve our environment
In 2012, Vitrales El Salvador and SalvaNATURA Ecological Foundation—a Salvadoran NGO—joined forces to raise awareness of the importance of preserving our environment.
We then created the “VitroNATURA” collection, using Margarita Llort’s inspiration from biodiversity. A share of the profits goes to environmental conservation and climate change projects to help with sustainable development and improve the quality of life for the El Salvador and Mesoamerica populations.
The upcycling process
The partnership with SalvaNATURA inspired us to develop “zero waste” production processes. We start by organizing all the leftover glass from large projects, using the small pieces in mosaics and grinding the smallest ones to create glass powder for other projects.
Here’s what the process looks like:
1. Sorting by color and cleaning of glass waste2. Storage and separation of the glass by size
3. Processing to obtain different thicknesses of glass powders
4. Selecting the best type of processed glass, depending on the design chosen for a new piece
Bottle upcycling
There’s a great need for recycling in El Salvador, so we began to reuse bottles. Recycling helps us expand our creativity beyond artistic and stained glass. We use all parts of the bottles to make coasters, cheese dishes, wells, lamps, and decorative items.
Here's what the process looks like:
2. Sticker classification, cleaning, and removal
3. Bottle cutting using the Vitrofusion process
4. Use of melded pieces to create new practical and decorative products.
